Replacing a wheel bearing

How to choose a bearing for the hub and replace it.

It is not possible to repair the hub bearing. That is why they resort to simply replacing the worn-out mechanism with a new one. You also need to know that the service life of the bearing in the hub varies greatly – from 30 thousand kilometers to 150 thousand. That is why such a unit is changed depending on its condition, and not according to regulations or service life. Only an experienced auto mechanic should replace the wheel bearing.

Before choosing the right bearing for the hub, you need to understand whether your car has ABS or not. If the car has ABS , then the bearing is used with a magnetic washer, otherwise there is no such washer. If we are talking about used cars, then manufacturers produced cars with different configurations.

Either at the top, or on the edge or at the bottom, there must be a manufacturer and country mark. Numbers that characterize size or other indicators may also be indicated. Such markings should be approached with the utmost care; if there is no indication of the country of origin, then it is most likely a fake. It is better not to take such a bearing.

Along with the bearing, the kit includes a hub nut. There may also be seals, bolts, pins or studs. As a rule, the hub nut is disposable. Before replacing, you must put the car in first gear and secure the wheels with shoes. The further procedure is as follows:

– it is necessary to remove the hub cap;

– using a socket, loosen the bearing nut;

– then you need to remove the washer, the bearing nut should be unscrewed completely;

– then you should press out the hub by sharply hitting the bolts with the brake discs;

– it is necessary to remove the CV joint from the bearing hole.

Often, when the hub is pressed out, a bearing ring remains, and it is quite problematic to remove it. If the paws fit into small grooves in the hub, you can use them. Before pressing a new bearing, the surface must be lubricated and cleaned. Pressing a new bearing into the hub can be done using an ordinary press with a force of up to three tons.
